Statement of the National Center for Victims of Crime Regarding Recent Shootings in the United States

May 25, 2022 -- As a Nation, we are exhausted by the endless news of massacres and murders, but we cannot become desensitized to them. Each loss of an innocent life is a tragedy. Last night we learned of another horrific shooting targeting elementary school children. This follows the shooting in New York targeting Black people, an anti-Taiwanese attack in a church in California, and a shooting in Wisconsin.

As parents, families, aunts, uncles, and friends, we are terrified for our children and community members, but we cannot lose hope. We hope for a society where people feel safe going to their schools, grocery stores, places of worship, attending sporting events, and anywhere else they travel in their community.

As the National Center for Victims of Crime, we don’t have a solution to stop these tragedies. Until those in power take action to protect our children and our communities, we will continue to see these senseless acts of hate and violence. What we can offer is our services for those impacted by these massacres.

The families and communities of all the shootings that have occurred over the last few weeks are in our hearts. Please take care of yourselves and hold your loved ones' a little closer, as we all work through these tragedies together.
