In February 2021 the United States Congressional Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy Committee on Oversight and Reform of the U.S. House of Representatives released a report entitled Baby Foods Are Tainted with Dangerous Levels of Arsenic, Lead, Cadmium, and Mercury detailing the findings from the Subcommittee’s investigation into the presence of heavy metals in baby foods. The Subcommittee found that several of the most popular brands of baby foods sold in the United States, including Gerber, Beech-Nut, Nuture (HappyBABY), Hain (Earth’s Best Organic, Walmart (Parent’s Choice) and Campbell’s (Plum Organic’s) had dangerous levels of heavy metals in their foods.
SGT subsequently filed suit against several baby good manufacturers on behalf of parent consumers that purchased baby food. SGT Partner Steven L. Bloch was subsequently appointed as co-lead counsel by the court in In re: Beech-Nut Nutrition Company Baby Food Litigation, 1:21-cv-00133-DNH-CFH (N.D.N.Y), and was appointed to the Plaintiffs’ executive committees by the courts in Wilson et al v. Walmart Inc. et al., No. 3:21-CV-00082 (E.D. Ark.) against Walmart, and in In re Plum Baby Food Litigation, Case No. 21-cv-02417 (D.N.J.). against Plum Organics and Campbell’s Soup Company.
